How to Avoid Pitfalls with Upcoming Spring Vacations!
A short get-away away with our family for a much-needed break from the stress of our daily lives is not only great for the heart and soul, it also permits the body to relax and recover from our regular exercise routine and provides an opportunity to try some new menu choices. By freeing yourself from your routine, you open your mind to new ways to have fun and reconnect with your loved ones. However, if you focus on the "spring" rather than the "break," you will have an easier time remembering two of the most important concepts to weight management: (1) you should strive for consistency, not perfection; and (2) your body needs at least 30 minutes of excercise at least five days a week. So here are some simple reminders to help you stay on track in your fitness goals and avoid the pitfalls while on "spring break":
Pack your workout clothes (shorts, sports bra, shirts, running socks and shoes); NO EXCUSES not to do some type of fun exercise;
Do something you really enjoy for 30 minutes each day while on vacation (take a hike, ride a bike, play 18 holes, try surfing, take a leisurely walk, run on the beach, play tennis with your spouse or kiddos);
Eat on a regular basis to keep your blood sugars from plumetting (eat at least every 3-4 hours);
Watch your portion sizes (choose small salads, healthy green vegetables, fresh fish, lean meats or poultry, and whole grain bread);
Keep up with your water intake (drink a glass of water with each of your meals and a couple of glasses of water in between meals);
Red wine or vodka (in moderation) are better choices than beer or mixed drinks;
Get eight hours of sleep each night while on vacation!
Have a wonderful time on vacation. Try some new type of exercise or simply a fun form for you, and open your mind to some fresh fruits, veggies, and fish. Come back refreshed and ready to spring toward your goals.
